The horse and rider represent the southern Alberta volunteers that fought in the South African Boer War in the early 20th century. The monument is in the centre of Calgary’s Central Memorial Park in Calgary’s Beltline district. “Beltline” was the name of the #2 streetcar route on the southside of downtown Calgary in the early days of Calgary’s transit system.
